Project Spotlight: Single Carport the Only Way It Would Work — Freshwater

The Site

Freshwater is a tightly settled suburb — older blocks, narrow driveways, and houses built close together. This project was a classic example of a site where there's really only one way to make a carport work, and you have to know what you're looking at to see it.

The driveway ran long and narrow between the house and the boundary. A standard gable-to-the-front setup wasn't possible — there simply wasn't the width to make it proportional or structurally clean. The only solution was to run the gable on the end, effectively turning the structure 90 degrees so the ridge line ran parallel to the driveway.

It's a common situation in older Northern Beaches suburbs, and it's something that trips up builders who don't think carefully about roof geometry before they start.

The Build

The structure was built using steel posts and beams — the right choice for this site for a few reasons:

• Slim profile — steel posts are smaller in section than timber, which matters on a narrow driveway where every centimetre counts
• Strength — the steel frame handles the roof loads cleanly with fewer members
• Clean aesthetic — the Colorbond Ironstone finish gives the carport a modern, sharp look that suits the street

The roof is flat ceiling panel (insulated panel roofing) — a smooth white underside that reflects light into the space and gives the structure a premium, finished appearance rather than the industrial look of exposed corrugated iron.

The Ironstone colour ties in with the existing fencing and gate visible in the photo — the carport looks like it belongs there, not like an afterthought bolted to the front of the property.

Getting the Geometry Right

When you run the gable on the end, the gutter detail at the front becomes critical. Water has to be collected along the low edge and directed away from the driveway entry — if this detail is wrong, you end up with water sheeting off the front of the roof every time it rains.

We ran the drainage to one side, keeping the driveway entry clean and dry.

Footings were poured to suit the existing driveway surface — no major breakup required, which kept the job tidy and the disruption to the client minimal.

The Result

A single carport that fits the site properly, looks sharp, and solves the problem the client had — a car exposed on a driveway with no protection.

When Mike finished up, the client came out to meet him in the driveway to say thank you. That's the kind of feedback that matters.
